Medical alerts, wireless burglar/fire alarm systems, hidden spy cameras
Home Security...the best bargains in electronics
Welcome. This site will provide enlightenment about some of the sophisticated personal security devices and systems
readily available in the marketplace.
Why should you care? Maybe you shouldn't. If you don't have a family and a home you're kinda fond of, or if you're a single or
married woman who doesn't feel the need to carry a non-lethal weapon for personal protection. Or if you don't have an elderly
single parent who insists on living at home, alone. And if being able to mount a tiny spy camera where you can monitor who comes
and goes on your property, is of no interest. Then, I guess the information provided here is not for you.
Thanks for stopping by. You are always welcome here.
On the other hand, if any of the above IS of interest, read on.
What you'll find here:
Home Medical Alarms...primarily aimed at the Seniors market, especially elderly singles living at home alone.
Why buy them?
They work. Many lives have been saved because an elderly person living alone, fell, was unable to get up, had the tiny
transmitter pinned to her garment. She pushed the button, a monitoring service operator received the alarm notification, and
opened a voice circuit to the house. The fallen victim was able to tell the operator what happened. No need for her to get to a
phone. A centrally located speaker/microphone device enables both the operator and the victim to speak and clearly hear each
other. The operator dispatched an EMS medical team, and the victim was safely transported to a hospital. This is NOT an unusual
event. So the bottom line is, the systems save lives. The cost is minimal. There are several quality companies that provide this
service.
We like LifeStation, for several reasons. The system hardware is free, the monitoring service is less than a dollar a
day, the company operates its own 24/7 UL certified monitoring facility, they have the AARP seal of approval, and they have a
solid track record of courteous, professional service. Get the details on page
2.
Free home burglar/fire alarm systems...
The 'free' part is not a phony. Protect America (the largest GE alarm dealer in the nation) will actually give you the hardware.
And what quality hardware it is. Made by General Electric, this wireless system is completely supervised. That means the Control
module can identify every sensor in the system, and will know if a door/window or a motion sensor has a low battery, or some
other problem that may prevent it from functioning. This information is then transmitted to a system keypad (one option, there
are others), which in turn relays the information to the user. Get more information on page 3.
Non-lethal defensive weapons
There are several small devices that are designed to be carried in pocket or purse. Generally, the idea is to use them and run
like hell, or at least move as fast as you can away from the point of contact, to a safe place. Tasers are the Rolls Royce of
non-lethal weapons. When fired, they put out about a million volts, down a wire and into the body of the bad guy. Painful, very
painful, but bearable, so you don't want to hang around once contact is made. A top quality Taser can run $300 or more, and you
may only get to use it once. Still, that once may make it all worth it.
Other non-lethal defensive weapons include the old standby, Pepper Spray and/or tear gas, stun guns, that function similar to the
Taser, and stun batons, which bring cattle prods to mind. They are all effective in varying degrees. See some samples on
page 4.
Hidden spy cameras
Wireless surveillance cameras, called mini spy cams or hidden spy cameras, have come into their own of late. Advancing
technology has reduced the size of video cameras to that of a pinhole or a dime. The pictures they provide, both color and black
and white (and infrared for seeing in the dark) provide good pictures. 300 to 400 lines of resolution. But you should know the
intended use in advance.
If you just want to play around with it, any of the low cost cameras will provide surprisingly decent images. They're good for
looking at a room (not an auditorium). But if some guy is trying to steal your car 50 feet away on the street, the camera will
show you the guy but forget trying to identify him or any other details.
If you need that kind of detail, 500 to 700 line resolution cameras and lenses are available. Figure a grand or more. Some
examples of the state of this art can be found on page 5
If you want to bypass the pages and go directly to the source, click on any of the pictures on the right. Thanks for the visit.
